Our organic chickpeas are high in protein and make an excellent replacement for meat in vegetarian and vegan diets. They're the main ingredient in hummus, which is a dip made with mashed chickpeas, tahini (sesame seed paste), olive oil, lemon juice, salt and garlic.

Chickpeas are versatile and can be used in a variety of dishes. One popular way to eat them is by adding them to salads, soups or sandwiches. Another way to enjoy chickpeas is to roast them, which makes for a delicious and crunchy snack. You can also incorporate them into veggie burgers or tacos.

 

What is the difference between Chick peas and Garbanzo beans?

  • The name chickpea comes from the Latin word cicer, referring to the plant family of legumes, Fabaceae. This is how most people refer to this product around the globe.
  • Its popular Spanish-derived name is the garbanzo bean. This name is popular in Hispanic communities.
  • When it comes down to the actual product, it is the exact same thing.

 

How to soak Organic Chickpeas?

  1. Before soaking, quickly pick over the chickpeas to remove any debris. You should also remove any broken or discolored chickpeas. You don't have to be obsessive about this though, the rinsing & soaking process will help surface up anything you might have missed.
  2. Place your dried chickpeas in a large bowl and rinse them thoroughly with cold water.
  3. Cover the chickpeas with cold water (1-2 inches above the dried chickpeas). The bowl should be large enough to allow them to at least double in size.
  4. Put the bowl on the counter, uncovered at room temperature.
  5. Every 2 hours, change the water while giving them a quick rinse and put the bowl back on the counter. Repeat this 4-6 times (Total 12 hours soak maximum). If you do not change the water the chickpeas will turn black and start smelling bad. If they soak for too long, they will turn black which means they are starting to sprout or ferment.
  6. Rinse them thoroughly with cold water, the skins should fall off easily. You should take off the skins when blending chickpeas for a smoother texture.
  • Organic chickpeas are harder to soak than other beans. They easily sprout, so extra care has to be taken to respect the timing in changing the water & soaking. Pinto & Kidney beans on the other hand need no water change and are much more tolerant to over-soaking. Organic chickpeas mean that they have no insecticides, pesticides & have not been irradiated. This implies that they are much more prone to sprout or ferment.

• Store below 15°C and < 65% humidity.
• Store in the dark as light degrades flavors.
• Mason jars make great storage containers.
• Can be frozen to prolong shelf life.
