Our organic white arborio rice is an Italian variety of superfino rice, one of the largest among the short Italian rice varieties in the species Oryza sativa japonica. Named after the commune of Arborio in the northwestern Italian region of Piedmont, Arborio rice is high in amylopectin starch, which is what gives risotto its creamy texture. The oval grains are about a quarter of an inch long and typically white.

Most famous for its use in risotto, Arborio rice lends its creamy texture for rice pudding, porridge, or other starchy desserts. If rinsed and cooked in the rice cooker or via the stovetop absorption method, rather than in the slow technique of risotto, Arborio won't absorb as much water and can be used as you would other short-grain rice varieties.

What is the difference between brown, red, black and white rice?

  • Brown, red and black rice are whole grain rice. That means they contain all parts of the grain, including the fibrous bran, the nutritious germ and the carb-rich endosperm.
  • White rice, on the other hand, has had the bran and germ removed, which are the most nutritious parts of the grain.

What are your different types of rice?

  • Ancient Black Rice (Black):
    • Origin: China
    • Type: Short grain rice
    • Fragrance: Nutty, earthy flavor and a very subtle, slightly sweet interior.
    • Features: Also called "Forbidden Rice", this is a special Chinese rice that is very nutritious.
  • Ancient Black Rice Mix (Multi-colored):
    • Origin: Multiple origins packaged in Canada
    • Type: Multiple types

  • Basmati Rice (Brown and White):
