"May Contain" statement NEW FOR 2025 (Progressive rollout):

  • In 2025 we will be progressively updating our labels and product pictures with our new label that now include a "May Contain" statement.
  • The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) dictates that "Cross-contamination statements may be declared by food manufacturers and importers".
  • That said, we hold ourselves to much higher standards than the CFIA and Health Canada rules oblige. Most companies do not and you will only rarely see "May Contain" statements.
  • If there is a remote chance that there might be cross-contamination of a priority allergen, we will declare it on the product label in the form of a "May Contain" statement.
  • A "May Contain" statement does not mean that the allergen is present in the product, it is simple a precautionary measure we take to stay the most transparent possible.
  • If an allergen is present in the product, it will be clearly declared in the ingredients.
  • For example our Quebec made flours come from a mill that makes both oat and wheat flours. Since both allergens are present in the mill we automatically declare the possibility of cross-contamination even if all precautionary measures are taken.
  • Only priority allergens are declared in the "May Contain" statement, which are:
    • Cereals & Grains: Triticale, Barley, Oats, Rye, Wheat.
    • Tree Nuts: Almonds, Brazil Nuts, Cashews, Hazelnuts, Macadamia Nuts, Pecans, Pine Nuts, Pistachios, Walnuts.
    • Peanuts
    • Sesame
    • Eggs
    • Milk
    • Soy
    • Mustard
    • Fish
    • Seafood: Crustaceans, Molluscs.
    • Sulphites
  • Priority allergens are decided by government agencies and health boards. To read more on the subject see "Common food allergens - Priority allergens" published by the CFIA.
  • Full CFIA cross-contamination statement explanation "Food allergen cross-contamination (or precautionary) statements".

Our organic cane sugar has the full-bodied taste of sugarcane and is much less processed. Unrefined cane sugar contains 17 amino acids, 11 minerals and 6 vitamins, including antioxidants, that may help reverse oxidative damage.

Organic cane sugar is unrefined sugar minus the cancer-causing and environmentally damaging pesticides present in conventionally-grown sugar cane.

Organic cane sugar is not like brown sugar, which is white sugar with molasses thrown back in. White sugar or table sugar is made by stripping the nutrients and color of the sugar cane plant through a several-step refining process. Think of it as the emaciated offspring of sugar cane. It offers no substantial health benefits because all the wholesome stuff has been thrown out during its production.

What are the different types of sugar made from sugarcane?

  • We are proud to offer 4 different types of sugar made from sugarcane. These 4 types have different processing methods and each have their use.
    • Organic Sugar: This light blond processed sugar is the most refined grade we offer. Made from sugarcane juice that has most of the natural molasses extracted by centrifugation. Lightest in color and most neutral flavor, mainly used in recipes that tolerate no sugarcane taste and need to be the whitest possible.
    • Organic Cane Sugar: This blond processed sugar is the most common type used. Made from sugarcane juice that has some of the natural molasses extracted by centrifugation. Light in color with a hint of sugarcane taste, used in the majority of recipes.
    • Organic Demerara Sugar: This brown very lightly processed sugar is a very healthy alternative to cane sugar. Made from sugarcane juice that has little of the natural molasses extracted by centrifugation. Brown in color with a distinctive sugarcane taste, used recipes that highlight the sugarcane taste or mask it well.
    • Organic Panela Sugar: This dark brown unprocessed sugar is the purest form of granulated sugarcane. Made from sugarcane juice that contains all of the natural molasses. Dark brown in color with a distinctive sugarcane taste, used recipes that highlight the sugarcane taste or mask it well.

General Storage Tips:

• Nothing beats vacuum sealing for freshness.
• Store below 15°C and < 65% humidity.
• Store in the dark as light degrades flavors.
• Mason jars make great storage containers.
• Can be frozen to prolong shelf life.
